Broken City is about a detective in New York City whose wife has been murdered. Five years later, Taggart's old friend Paul Simms (Jeffrey Wright) offers him a private security job to investigate his wife's murder, which the NYPD has failed to solve. Despite suspecting that Simms is guilty of murdering his wife, he takes the job. He works with childhood friend and current Internal Affairs investigator Nate Roenick (Barry Pepper), who grew up knowing both Simms and Taggart. A reporter, Erin Duffy (Catherine Zeta-Jones), is investigating corruption in government and links it to Mayor Hostetler (Russell Crowe).
