Who is illya Kuryakin ?
Illya Kuryakin (born Iliya Nikolayevich Kuryakin) is a fictional character that appears in both MGM's original "James Bond" television series "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." and its spin-off series "The Girl from U.N.C.L.E." played by David McCallum who also played Illya's partner Napoleon Solo on both shows as well as the 2015 film.
Illya Kuryakin was born in Leningrad, USSR to a Russian father and an American mother (which makes Ilya a naturalised citizen of the United States). His father Nikolai Kuryakin is a Soviet agent who died while working undercover in East Germany when Illya was still young, leaving his son to be raised by his mother who he lost after she moved to America with her new husband Richard Beymer before he became a teenage spy who is an expert in martial arts and acrobatics.
Ilya Kuryakin was raised as an only child, which left him with a strong sense of individuality that was not replicated by his stepfather Richard Beymer or his mother's new husband. Ilya considered himself an American citizen after being adopted and raised by them until he became part of the United Network Command for Law Enforcement (U.N.C.L.E.) towards the end of season 1 where he met and fell in love with fellow agent Natasha Romaine whom she married him when they fought together against Draconis before her death in season 2 when he had to deal with his distress over her death, but moved on from her death to have a serious relationship with fellow agent Maggie King whom he married.
He worked with his partner Napoleon Solo (Lucas Douglas) to fight the forces of THRUSH, an international criminal organisation led by Alexander Waverly (John Abbott). The two eventually became so respected and feared that even other super-villains were reluctant to challenge them, as was demonstrated in "The Two Faces of U.N.C.L.E." In fact, no enemy ever successfully killed either Illya or Napoleon during the run of both series combined although they often survived near-death situations such as being caught in an avalanche ("The Spy With My Face"), enclosed under an avalanche ("The Dictator's Return"), trapped inside a sinking submarine ("The Double Affair"), almost crushed by a boulder ("The Winged Aphid"), and even surviving the explosion of their own car ("The Frightened Fisherman").
Illya was also frequently shown to be extremely intelligent, with his analytical skills superior to those of Napoleon or other agents that were considered "geniuses". Illya's intelligence often became his most formidable weapon, as he was capable of outwitting some of THRUSH's best operatives. As an example, in the episode "Doomtrooper", Agent 13 (played by Larry Storch) asks Illya if there are any agents at U.N.C.L.E. who are not geniuses; Illya tells him, "I am not a genius, I am just more intelligent than you".

Kuryakin also showed a gift for languages: besides his native Russian and English, he is fluent in French and German (the latter bearing slight traces of a very pronounced Slavic accent), and the series stated that he could speak "some" Chinese. This was demonstrated in the episode "The Dragon's Legacy", where he converses with a Chinese woman as part of his investigation of a smuggling ring based out of Hong Kong.
He is also an accomplished acrobat and hand-to-hand combatant, being trained by former KGB operative Yuri Krotkov (aka Mr Waverly). Although not capable of lifting as much weight as Solo, Napoleon described him as "...not...a lightweight when it comes to hand to hand.", although despite this Illya is only slightly stronger than Napoleon who isn't noted for being particularly strong but can lift 3 times his own weight. He also demonstrates expertise at using weaponry, preferring small arms such as pistols and rifles over larger weapons such as automatic rifles and machine guns, which he finds impersonal and distasteful. His lack of size and strength compared to Napoleon is demonstrated in a series 2 episode where the two are sent on an undercover mission, when Illya's cover requires him to be chained up by his wrists in front of a man who has been told that Illya killed one of his men. While Napoleon is easily able to break free, it takes Kuryakin almost ten minutes of struggling with all his might before he can snap the chains apart. One thing Solo could do that Ilya couldn't was drive anything they needed for their missions under any condition—Napoleon demonstrated this early in the pilot episode ("The Vulcan Affair"). In fact, what Ilya's role was mostly reduced to for the first season was providing cover fire from an outside position, a task he performed with great skill.
Illya also has no fighting ability against any form of weaponry that emits some sort of energy discharge or radiation (i.e., lasers). Whenever Illya is attacked by such a weapon, his eyes would begin to scream and burn and usually becomes incapacitated due to pain ("The Spy With My Face"). In order to overcome this weakness, Kuryakin uses special sunglasses equipped with dark-green lenses as protection ("The Secret Sceptre Affair") A later episode reveals the true motivation behind his inexplicable sensitivity—as a child in Russia, he had witnessed his father and mother killed by their own people.
He is also referred to as Number One or Ilya Kuryakin. Illya has demonstrated a vast range of skills and abilities over the course of the show, including expert marksmanship, superb martial artist, pickpocket, forgery, actress and disguise-maker as well as areas of specialty such as mechanics and chemistry. He often served undercover missions with Napoleon Solo.
