8 ball pool is a cue sport that is played on a rectangular table with pockets at each of the four corners and in the centre of each long side. The game is played by two teams of one or more players with the team playing first breaking the balls and then each player on that team taking a turn, ideally using only one hand at a time. During a player's turn, the player must either shoot any ball on the table into a pocket or spend up to three seconds trying to pocket an unpocketed ball from anywhere on the playing surface. If no balls are potted, or if no opponent wants to risk such an attempt, play passes to another player from the same team who must shoot within three seconds after being handed that team's cue stick.
8 ball pool can be played by as few as 2 players, but is usually played with a full complement of 8 or 9 balls. The goal would be to pocket the 8 ball (typically striped black), and then sink the other 7 balls in any order. Games are typically organized into sets, where competitors will try to win one game each. A set ends when a team successfully pockets all of its assigned object balls first, or if three mistakes have been made (a foul). When a set ends without one team winning the number of games it needed to win that set, the teams proceed to another frame of "sudden death". In this case, play continues until either team wins by pocketing all its assigned object balls, or until a mistake is made that would normally be considered a foul. A team may "borrow" the cue ball from another team if they have no available balls on their own and/or don't want to take one of their opponent's balls out, but must return it at the end of the frame. This is known as "cueing off".
British Players of 8 Ball Pool
The game originates with British players in billiard rooms around 1830s–1870s. It was this time that wooden rails began to replace other methods for confining balls to specific areas of the table; before then, there were other restrictions (such as hanging pockets) that kept three-ball (and four-ball) games from being developed. As new variations of indoor billiards developed, new names were applied to them, depending on their primary differences from the older games. Games such as three-ball and straight rail became the ancestor of eight-ball by way of the creation of a "break" shot that pocketed all the balls in a cluster under (or over) a rack. Pool or snooker evolved from three-ball via the intermediary four-ball game with its larger table size and use of pockets placed differently than they were in American pool/billiards (such as at 90 degrees).
8 Ball Pool & Music
The word "pool" is used as a metaphor for chance (e.g., "There's no pool"), or fate and destiny ("It was written in the pool"). In some forms of pop music, such as rock or hip-hop, slang terms entitled 'pool' are used to refer to groupies who cluster around performers/artists backstage or in hotel rooms during concerts or tours.
Another archaic meaning refers to "a person" with little money but many debts; thus he has nothing left to put (or "keep") into his pocket except his "pool" of money.
Eight ball is an American invention developed independently from British pool in running halls during the early 20th century. The game arose when players started using their cue ball to intentionally crack (via a controlled double-hit) their opponents' racked balls, a practice called "raking" or "drafting", and pocket the resulting . The earliest known mention of this practice occurs in 1908: "... the 'rake-off', which is not an accepted feature of the game at all among players of the first class."
Because it was used as both a noun (e.g., "to run out from the eight ball,") and a verb ("To win by being behind in points and catching up without the opponent doing so"), some consider it to be perhaps one of the earliest origins for modern usage of such terms; although arguably they may not have been referring to pool specifically but instead variants using racking balls as scoring targets, such as English billiards, or even the practice of racking up balls that have been scratched (e.g., "scratch in the eight-ball") from straight rail.
With the advent of nine-ball, which arose from an effort to standardize American-style pool games, containing a single called object ball on each , the game was quickly standardized with one exception: The number of balls that must be pocketed on a break shot is sometimes still limited to seven; at other times it may be any number less than eight after a normal rack is legally racked. This variation exists because players frequently used this option in creative ways that were advantageous to them but not to their opponents, and so almost no tournaments except those intended to be nine-ball-only allow the break shot to require any more than seven balls.
Who is Michael Hoban ?
Michael Hoban is the international master of pool who worn this 8 ball leather jacket, recognized by the World Pool-Billiard Association. He has also been inducted into the Billiards Hall of Fame. In 2005, he won the championship event at the United States 8 ball pool (USAPL) Nationals in Reno, Nevada.
Beginning of Michael Hoban
Hoban began playing pool when he was three years old. At the age of five, his father took him to a local bar in Queens, New York where he watched and learned the basics of the game from players there. He also honed his skills by playing against older children on banked-carpet tables at neighborhood clubs. By the time he reached high school, Hoban was considered a top player in New York City. Later that year, Hoban won both the World Straight Pool Championship and the World 14.1 Continuous Pool Championship (The Hat Trick). Those victories helped propel him to become one of eight members inducted into Billiards Congress of America's Hall of Fame as an amateur player in 2004.
A new game called snooker evolved from three-ball and straight rail. Snooker had a pocket at the side of the table, like American pool, but used five reds (instead of six) and 15 balls total (instead of 16). As it evolved in England, this game was played using mostly or entirely on full tables; pockets began to be added in as extensions to existing tables instead of replacing them with smaller versions designed just for pocket play later on. There are now several commercially available pocket billiard tables being made specifically for pocket games such as three-ball which use normal sized house cues and balls with standard diameters.
In the 1970s, Hoban was ranked number one in the world for his game of choice, straight pool. At that time, he defeated Hall-of-Famer and reigning champion Efren Reyes in a televised match by a score of 50–25. In 1973, Hoban served as president of the World Pool Association (WPA), which later merged with two other organizations to form the Billiards and Snooker Federation (BSF). From 1976 to 1983, he served as vice chairman for the International Pool Tour, which was sponsored by Brunswick Corporation's Grady Ross division. However, according to Hoban: "The tour lost its sponsorship when Grady Ross died... and we had to put it on hold for about eight years." In that time, pool was not played professionally. Nonetheless, he also said: "Efren Reyes once told me—and I'm sure he'll remember this—that for the two or three years before we had to bring it off-line... Efren always felt that if there had been a tour then and if he'd had television coverage, that he would have become world champion in those two or three years." Sometime later, Hoban became acquainted with Jon Corzine of Action Products International (API) and helped him revive the WPA which resulted in the formation of the WPBA.
