The show revolves around the adventures of Steven, a hybrid human-gem from a fictional world called "Universe City". He lives with three magical alien beings of different species: Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl. Together they help him come to terms with who he is as an individual while saving the world.
"Steven Universe", along with its spin-off "Gem Quest", were inspired by Sugar's short film "Singles"; some thematic elements are also shared with her other work in animation, "Adventure Time". The show was developed over roughly two years by Sugar and her crew through story boarding, each 11-minute episode took roughly nine months to finish.
