Who Is Steven Universe
Steven Universe is an American animated television series created by Rebecca Sugar for Cartoon Network. The show was previewed in November 2013 and originally aired from May 2014 to July 2015.It is Cartoon Network's first animated series to be created solely by a woman. The show revolves around the adventures of Steven, a hybrid human-gem from a fictional world called "Universe City". He lives with three magical alien beings of different species: Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl. Together they help him come to terms with who he is as an individual while saving the world.
"Steven Universe", along with its spin-off "Gem Quest", were inspired by Sugar's short film "Singles"; some thematic elements are also shared with her other work in animation, "Adventure Time". The show was developed over roughly two years by Sugar and her crew through story boarding, each 11-minute episode took roughly nine months to finish.
>"Steven Universe" has been critically acclaimed for its design, music, voice acting, characterization and representation of queer identity. The series has seen multiple awards nominations and wins at film festivals, including the Annecy Cristals in 2015 and 2016, as well as an Emmy Award nomination in 2018. Many comic book artists have also praised "Steven Universe", with some openly attributing their work to it; various homages have been drawn from screen captures and storyboards posted online by the show's creative team.
>The comics are written by "Steven Universe "s creator Rebecca Sugar along with other writers (including former supervising producer Zack Keller), which began publication on January 1, 2016 through KaBOOM! Studios'kaboom! imprint. The comics have been positively reviewed for their character interactions, humor and faithfulness to the original series, while criticism has been directed towards the art style of later issues, which deviates significantly from Sugar's original designs.
The comic books sold over 80,000 copies within its first year of publication; this success was attributed by Cartoon Network to a highly successful convention tour which included signings with both Sugar and the voice actors of the cartoon show. According to Comic book Resources, the second volume also became a monthly top selling title for January 2017 with an estimated 25,300 units sold during that period
On May 11th 2018 it was announced by Lucy Knisley on Twitter that Steven Universe had officially been added to the list of books that will be added to the upcoming library at St. Lawrence University which is due to open in 2019
A short series of comics titled "Gem Quest" was announced on July 28, 2015 and released weekly through new site "The New York Times." According to Sugar, each comic would represent a major event from Steven's life with "Steven Universe," but she declined to reveal details; it continued where "Gem Glow" left off. The comics were written by Sugar along with Elliott Kalan and Ben Levin.
On January 29, 2016 it was announced that a new series of comics would be published by KaBOOM! starting in May with the first one titled "Steven Universe and the Crystal Gem adventures." The comic will be written by Jeremy Sorese and illustrated by Coleman Engle. According to an interview with Sugar, she created every single page of art for these issues
;A special edition print titled "Little Steven" has been released at New York Comic Con in October 2017 and San Diego Comic Con in 2018. Both contains "exclusive original content featuring Rebecca Sugar's one-of-a-kind illustrations" (according to Boom Studios). There is also a variant cover featuring Greg Universe.
